"Graphics cards featuring Nvidia's new GeForce 7100 GS graphics processor unit (GPU), which was recently added to the company's entry-level product lineup, will hit the market in the middle of September, according to sources at Taiwan-based graphics card makers. The GeForce 7100 GS uses the NV44 core, which is currently known as implemented in Nvidia GeForce 6200 GPUs featuring TurboCache technology, and there is also a way to upgrade the GeForce 6200 with TurboCache to the GeForce 7100 GS, indicated the sources.

The new GPU also supports TurboCache technology that helps graphics card makers reduce costs by allowing a GPU to render directly to system memory, instead of utilizing on-board memory on a graphics card. Positioning it as supplementing the forthcoming Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium operating system, Nvidia aims the GeForce 7100 GS to compete with the ATI Radeon X1300CE, the sources indicated."

The article goes on to indicate that it may be possible to flash the 6200 with TurboCache up to the 7100 GS, although nVidia indicates that the GPU on the 6200 and the 7100 GS are different.
