In a much anticipated move, Sun yesterday announced that it was releasing to the Open Source community all of the Java Source Code under the GPL version 2.  Previously, only the Java Enterprise Edition had been available to the Open Source community, and only under the Community Development and Distribution License (CDDL), a more restrictive Open Source license than the GPL.

While this is good news, what may be even better news for the Open Source movement is that Sun appears to be seriously considering releasing the source code for Solaris under the GPL as well.  Solaris is also currently available under the CDDL.  Releasing it under the GPL would clear the way for some significant Solaris technology to make it into the Linux code base, or perhaps some Linux technology could make it into Solaris; either way, the potential upside could be huge.
