The PCI Special Interests Group (PCI-SIG) has completed the specifications for new cabling which allows external PCI express devices to be hooked-up to PCs.

We can expect to see new devices such as external storage, making use of PCIe link widths of x1, x4, x8 and x16, sometime  in 2007.  Transfer speeds possible will be well in excess of current giga-bit ethernet connections.
