Seagate Technology announced Friday that they have shipped the world's highest density desktop drive.  The drive achieves storage densities of 180 Gb per square inch, or 250 GB per 3.5" platter.

Read the press release at Seagate:

The Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, the first in a new family of drives which will eventually feature in excess of 1 TB of storage, is built using a SATA II interface with 3 Gb/s transfer speeds, and sets new benchmarks for performance, acoustic, and power consumption levels for desktop drives.  It uses second-generation perpendicular storage technology to achieve its new capabilities.
