According to Michael Danseglio, program manager in the Security Solutions groupl at Microsoft, companies should think about purchasing an automated solution which can wipe hard drives and reinstall operating systems from scratch, as a practical way to recover from malware infestations. At the InfoSec World Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fl., he stated "When you are dealing with rootkits and some advanced spyware programs,
the only solution is to rebuild from scratch. In some cases, there
really is no way to recover without nuking the systems from orbit". He's right, of course. Once you've allowed malware onto your system, it may be impossible to get rid of, short of nuking the system. But here's a thought: maybe if Microsoft could figure out how to build a more secure OS, it wouldn't be such an issue! Read more of his comments and observations at E-Week. The drop by and tell us what you think about the subject, in the forums!
