7900gs 256MB Just got me a new 7900gs 256MB card, 450/1320 at stock and clocks to 575/1400 easily and will go upto 625/1450 but gets too hot. Bargain for less than £120, and a review will be with you by sunday.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html 4th from the bottom. I actually got sent a Palit card, now running at 580/1450, the core overclocks very well but gets rather hot coming up to 600MHz and the memory is good for just over 1400MHz, which is what you would expect for samsung 1.4ns memory rated for 1428Mhz at its standard operating voltage. Core will run upto 625MHz but not for long as the heat climbs rapidly and stability fails at about 70c at that speed. Its not really worth buying a bigger cooler unless you already have one as for £50 more you can get the 7900GTO which clocked higher and has a 24pp8vs config.

Now with a minor pencil-mod Ive got the core running at 610Mhz with a 1450MHz memory speed. ![]() Review is coming soon but I'm now including how to do the pencil mod as well. EDIT: now upto 635/1450 but peaking at 74c under artefact testing which is about as high as I want to go, I would buy higher-rated cooling but the thing with this card is that it is not expensive enought to warrant it, by this I meant that for £40 more (the cost af a very nice cooler/water attachment) you can buy a card that will clock higher anyway (the 7900GTO) and has 24 pipelines. around the 9k mark in 3dmark05 as well BTW

I too have a 7900gs...xfx version, running slight overclock to 520/1480 (stock 480/1400)...now my rig is e6400 with 1 gig ddr2-667...and I'm only getting 8200 in 3dmark05...compared to your 9k...does an extra gig of ram make a big difference, or am I somehow not running at my potential? -Ashley

Unfortunately the mod im using can only be done on the red PCB palit cards AFAIK, you can mod the BIOS to get a very slight increase in speed.

Looking forward to the review / guide mate. X1950XTXs and 7950GX2s are all well and good, but in the big scheme of things, as overclockers, these bargain basement performance honeypots are what we're after any day of the week.

Not bad for a £115 card, some people with 7900GT cards would struggle to reach this score: BTW...Ive submitted my review to Gizmo so you can see how easy to mod this version of the card is.

I'd rather stick with my 7600GT any day since it's got higher clock speed and doesn't peak so high. It may not have as many PP's but it's the raw clock speed that get's it past anything. I mean, in CSS stress test with all at max, i'm getting 112FPS (did get 140FPS earlier). I think it has something to do with the XP reinstall but like i say, i'd still take my 7600 any day. I'm thinking of getting a new cooler for it soon though. Anyone know of any for a 7600 or would a 6600 cooler be fine? Thanks, Scott.

7900 Gto Just a quick note regarding the 7900GTO; The stock speeds are 650 core/1320 mem and I OC'd it out of the box to 710/1600 with no volt mods, just removed the stock TIM and a little bit of AS5 on the core. This is 9.2% on the core 21.2% on the ram. The ram is extremely flexible due to the nature of the card (7900 GTX is clocked at 1600 I believe) but the core is not nearly as flexible as this 7900GS as shown by monkeyman, although I don't plan on doing any volt modding. Very nice review! ![]() -Xander
