Apple is making it more difficult for iPhone 4 owners to perform simple DIY repairs by replacing common Phillps head screws with a rare "pentalobe" screws. While newer iPhone 4s have included the screws from the factory, it is also Apple policy to replace any Phillips head screws with the new pentalobe screws whenever an iPhone 4 is taken in for service.

Google didn't have a booth of its own at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year in Las Vegas, but signs of the search giant's broad reach were apparent throughout the event. It seems as if practically every major consumer electronics company has adopted Google's Android mobile operating system in some capacity.

Intel's recent acquisitions and partnerships have been designed to take it into new markets rather than strengthen its existing hands - McAfee, Infineon Wireless and embedded software maker Wind River are all taking it in new directions. The latest Wind River project, indeed, is laden with ironies as the company teams up with Intel rival VIA Telecom to create a low cost reference platform for Android, an OS that has remained closely tied to the ARM-based processors rather than Intel's x86.

Upholding its tradition of strong support for Windows branded mobile phone software, HTC announced five devices at the launch of Windows Phone 7, three of which are already available. The HTC 7 Trophy is marginally the cheapest of the three due to slightly more modest hardware but thanks to some neat design it's still well worth checking out.

Google hasn't shared much information about Gingerbread, Honeycomb, and Ice Cream, but details about future versions of Android are beginning to slip out. According to an Android fan site called Phandroid, a source close to Google has provided a peek at what is in store for the Gingerbread version of Android.
The first and most noticeable change to the operating system is that the graphics and icons have been refreshed. Based on a screen shot acquired by Phandroid, the application icons have a more uniform appearance and provides for a cleaner look to the operating system.
