Read the full story at The New York Times : A: Restrictions from Microsoft reportedly prevents netbook makers from selling computers with large amounts of memory installed. Although early netbooks usually ran on variations of the Linux operating system, Microsoft got into the tiny-laptop game by making its older Windows XP Home Edition system available to netbook makers. (Microsoft has been trying to officially retire Window XP since last year for new computer sales, but low-cost netbooks were given an exemption and some estimates now give Windows XP about 90 percent of current netbook sales.)
