By now, you should have noticed that the front page looks that little bit different. If you haven't, then it might be worth a visit to get your eyes checked! Thanks to the hard work of the Graphics team, especially Danrok and Dod, we have a new look that's definately due. Over the next few months there will be other changes around the site too, but I'm not allowed to let the cat out of the bag just yet!

TCQ, RAID, SCSI and SATA!

With the advent of Intel's 9xx chipsets that natively support tagged command queuing (TCQ) over SATA, much noise has been made about the boost in performance that TCQ supposedly offers. Many people have been looking forward to TCQ for an extra performance boost on their system.

However, things are not all they seem. Storage Review looks closely into TCQ in a RAID environment, using both SCSI and SATA. The conclusions they draw are perhaps surprising to those who have not had the oppertunity to work with storage technology. Rather than spoil their surprise, lets just say that at the lower end of the RAID market, SATA and SCSI are very close in performance. As for that TCQ - you'll have to read the article!

Gave up with the Globalwin Silentstream watercooling as it kept getting airlocks. Flawed design so sent it back.

Had a brainwave!!!

Bought a Zalman CPU Block for watercooling.

Bought a storage container (holds about 4 gallons) and 8mm clear hose from B&Q.

Dug out my old pond pump (4500 litres per hour).

Put the pump in the now water filled storage container and connected the hoses to the CPU block and tested for leaks.

Put it in my system this morning.

Ran for 20mins under full load.

Ambient temperature was 21c
CPU temp (full load) was 35c

Now its cooler and quieter!!!

And the Golden Shoehorn award goes to... The Snarf. Jammed full of watercooling and 640 gb across 4 full size drives, all in an XPC chassis! Is there such a thing as too compact?

A government program called E-Rate, begun in 1998, and funded by the 1996 Telecommunications Act, appears to be rife with corruption. The program, intended to fund Internet access for U.S. schools, seems to have spent a lot of it's money instead lining the pockets of school administrators and company officials.

A government program that is corrupt. Who would've thunk it?
