UMC will make 80 nm ATI/AMD RS690

AMD have apparently decided to tap UMC to make their next generation chipset.  Prior to the AMD acquisition of ATI, TSMC had been the manufacturer of choice for the ATI chipsets.  This development has caused some speculation regarding AMD's possible future outsourcing plans.

It would seem to me to be a highly logical move on AMD's part, as they have worked closely with UMC in the past, and are almost certainly too capacity constrained themselves at the moment to be able to take on any new manufacturing.  In addition, TSMC work closely with Intel, which would probably be a good reason for AMD to not wish to use TSMC for manufacturing.

One question that could stand to be asked is "Why not Chartered Semiconductor?".  We know that AMD have an agreement with Chartered for 65nm CPUs.  It may be that AMD is already saturating Chartered's capacity as well.
