Samsung announced recently that they have come up with a way to manufacture flash memories that results in a doubling of storage capacity with no increase in die area, according to Technology Review.  Researchers at Samsung have been able to do this by utilizing a 3D stacking technology to create two layers of flash cells, one atop the other.  Although 3D stacking technology has been explored in the past, it has not been heavily utilized due to inherent issues with the stacking process that result in reliability and manufacturability issues.  The researchers have managed to overcome these issues using a couple of novel techniques.
