The Albany Times-Union reported Wednesday that the Public Authorities Control Board gave it's approval to a US $650 million cash grant for AMD, which will enable AMD to build a US $3.2 billion fab facility in Saratoga county New York, sometime between 2007 and 2009.  The grant is part of a total incentive package of US $1.2 billion (including tax and other incentives) to build the plant in the Luther Forest Technology Campus, located in the tows of Malta and Stillwater New York.  AMD already does advanced research at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

AMD will now sign an agreement that gives it until the summer of 2009 to make the final decision on whether to build the plant or not.  Once that final decision is made, the State of New York will release the $650 million cash grant.  $500 million will be used to purchase 200 acres in the Technology Campus and to build the facility.  The remaining $150 million will be used for further research and development, either at the new facility or at the university.

The plant is expected to create approximately 1,200 new jobs directly, as well as thousands of construction and related high-tech jobs.  AMD expects that the plant (if constructed) will be online by no later than 2012.
