Samsung have announced that they are sampling to their customers the world's first 16 Gb NAND-based Flash chip manufactured on 50 nm process technology.  The chip makes use of multilevel cell technology (thus allowing the chip to store more than one bit per cell) and a 4 KB block size (instead of the conventional 2KB block size) to cut read times in half, and write times by 1/3, as compared to previous products.

Samsung plans to begin mass production within 3 months.  The introduction of this technology is expected to accelerate the introduction and adoption of solid-state flash-based disks.
