The federal government noticed the growing power needs of computer servers

The tech industry and U.S. federal government are working together to target energy-hungry computer data centers while trying to make the continuing Internet boom of computer servers more energy-efficient.  To help make purchasing more efficient server equipment a more popular choice, one important goal of the collaborators is to set standards for energy consumption.  Pacific Gas & Electric estimates that Northern and Central California data centers use between 400 to 500 megawatts, which is enough energy to power more than 300,000 homes.
