How callers are conned by TV quiz channels

The alleged tricks used by TV quiz channels to part viewers from their cash were exposed yesterday.

Robert Winsor, a former call operator for Big Game TV, claimed answers were changed and phones left unanswered to wring money out of callers.

Mr Winsor, submitting evidence to a Commons committee on quiz channels, said that in Oct 2005, he took calls for a game which asked viewers to name "things you see in a pub". "The top answer of pork scratchings was worth £200 and a winner guessed the answer within the first 30 minutes of the game," he said. If the top prize went quickly, he said, it was bad for call revenues.
