Peter Gabriel has free music ambitions

Musician, and former Genesis man, Peter Gabriel is launching a new website project called We7.  The site is offering free music, which is paid for by advertising. We7 is live now, in beta form.

Their motto is "Don't steal it, We7 it". All music, which will be hosted there, can be copied for personal use, freely, without fear of prosecution, or black helicopters arriving in the dead of the night.

The trade-off is that a commercial will be digitally grafted to each track.

Gabriel told Digital Planet: "A lot of people under the age of 30 do not buy music anymore, and I think record executives are noticing their kids doing what every other kid is doing, and they, and artists, have to say, 'how do we deal with this?'"
