Some way, somehow, the folks at HKEPC appear to have gotten their hands on a sample of Intel's upcoming 45nm processor, codenamed Penryn. If the benchmarks that the site has published turn out to be true, gamers and content creators should rejoice.

By my rough guess just eyeballing the chart, the 2.33GHz "Wolfdale" sample (6MB L2) looks to have an average of an 11 to 12 percent performance lead over the 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo E6550 (4MB L2) across the board, with the majority of that boost coming in 3D games and media encoding.

At the top end of the 3D gaming spectrum, Wolfdale has a 19.20 percent lead over Core 2 Duo CineBench 9.5's OpenGL Software test. In Half-Life 2, Wolfdale's lead is an even more dramatic 31.12 percent. These two scores are particularly high, though, with other benchmarks like Doom 3, 3DMark 05 and 06, and Far Cry bringing Wolfdale's lead down to a more modest but still significant 10 percent or lower.

On the media encoding side of things, the DivX 6.6 (with SSE4) 1080p MPEG2 to MPEG4 conversion task has Wolfdale cutting the Core 2 Duo's encoding time in half, giving the 45nm chip a 115 percent lead over its predecessor. But, like the Half-Life 2 score, this stratospheric boost is the outlier, with the other encoding tasks showing advantages for Wolfdale in the 6 to 12 percent range...More
