AMD takes performance crown from NVIDIA with new 4870 X2

AMD's 4870 X2 launch this morning heralds the company's return to full competition across all segments of the graphics industry. At $549, the new dual-GPU/single-card solution isn't cheap, but the value it offers at that price point is surprisingly good, even as it delivers extremely competitive performance.The primary advantage of these types of dual-GPU/single-board solutions is twofold: First, they bring dual-GPU performance to motherboards that lack a second PCIe slot, and second, they allow dual-GPU configurations on chipsets that wouldn't otherwise allow it. This last is an NVIDIA-centric benefit, as that company only allows SLI solutions on its own chipsets, but it's still a recognized reason to consider multi-GPU boards.  [Comments...]
