BF2 stats system 'hacked'

A group of hackers appear to have spent some time looking at Battlefield 2, and have discovered a method they could use to modify the stats records of users. As you probably already know, as you play on official BF2 servers, your ranking is used to unlock some features of the game. These hackers appear to have found the mechanism that EA/DI use to unlock the features, and have worked out how to replay the messages to the stats servers. This has allowed them to unlock weapons on approximately 10,000 accounts. EA have decided to 'roll-back' the changes, but unfortunately it means that people will have to reselect any unlocks they had done previously. However, no-one will lose any points.

If this had occured on unranked servers, it would be no big deal. However, due to the nature of the way the stats work, this hack cannot be detected by punkbuster. Hopefully EA will be able to rectify this problem, but it may well mean there is another patch in the works for BF2.

Been affected by this? Why don't you tell us what happened?
