VIA southbridges and SATA2

Got a motherboard with a VIA southbridge on it that supports SATA, and you want to use SATA II hard disks on it? Well, if you're unlucky enough to have a VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420 or VT6421L southbridge, then you'll have to do some special configuration on your SATA II hard disks to make them work. Both Western Digital and Samsung are shipping SATA II hard disks, with Hitachi, Seagate and Maxtor intending to very shortly. The issue appears to be down to the way the drives autodetect the speed together with the way that the southbridge operates. The result of this issue is that the drives try to operate at SATA II speeds, and the southbridge tries to operate at SATA I speeds, generally confusing everything.

We're trying to put together a list of jumper settings in this thread so that people with SATA II disks can set them to be SATA I for affected motherboards.
