Steam wants to be the place for buying and playing games on the PC, and the features the service offers are already impressive. Valve is about to add another layer to Steam however, with the addition of downloadable content. Now games can be used as their own virtual storefront, selling new content and expansions directly to consumers.

The feature can be used whether or not the game was purchased via Steam, and is now a part of Steamworks, the free package of tools and services given to developers to get their games fully compatible with all the features Steam offers. The first game to take advantage of this new feature? The Maw, from Twisted Pixel, offering new levels to the game.   [Comments...]
