The Register has an interesting story about a high-tech 'black' U.S. project they call 'Blackstar'.  What makes this story interesting is not just that it is about a 'black' (meaning top-secret) project, but that the project supposedly has developed two-stage-to-orbit system that could place a small military payload into low-earth orbit.  However, there are those who say that such a system is completely absurd, and has no practical value.

Thus, we get to the crux of the matter.  Who do you believe?  The government would obviously have a vested interest in keeping such a project secret, and even spreading disinformation to dispell rumors.  On the other hand, the practical issues pointed out are significant and would seem to be real.

So, what do you think?  Is it a real project; could the capability actually exist?  Or is this just some wild flight of fancy based on rumors and half-truths?  Tell us, in the forums
