A 10% increase in broadband availability means a 1.2 to 1.5 point increase in GDP, Federal Communications Commission Chair Julius Genachowski says. Making broadband available for all Americans isn't enough, according to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who this week placed renewed emphasis on the importance of making broadband easily adoptable and affordable, particularly for population groups that have largely been left out.

AT&T and Verizon are up in arms about a "slanted" survey of global broadband practices done for the FCC which concludes that mandatory line-sharing rules produce better Internet speeds and penetration rates. Is it possible the US could (again) force ISPs to open their networks?
It was a report that went right to the roots of United States broadband policy, so it should come as no surprise that it's getting hammered by the telecommunications industry.

The federal government is partnering with private industry to modernize the electrical grid.
From InformationWeek
President Obama announced in October that the federal government would distribute $3.4 billion in grants to modernize the electrical grid and fund the expansion of so-called smart grid projects. The money comes from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, previously known as the stimulus bill. The government says private industry will add $4.7 billion to the grants, bringing the total investment to $8 billion. [More...] [Comments...] |
