Market for e-readers may be turning a page

Since its premiere in late 2007, Amazon's Kindle has been almost synonymous with e-readers.

But the market for the dedicated digital reading devices is heating up with rivals offering lower prices, more features, brighter colors and new content in a bid to not only take on Amazon but also expand the niche into a mainstream category.

The next year is poised to be a breakout one for e-readers as consumers - not just the early adopting technophiles and book lovers - get their hands on them for the first time.

"I think the market is on the verge of exploding, not only in the U.S. but worldwide," said Neil Jones, inventor of the Cool-er e-reader. "I'm thrilled to be part of this marketplace because it's potentially immense."
